An Excerpt from the short story "BAD BLOOD"

Picture
When I arrived home I found Nakia on the couch crying. I felt like I could never leave her alone because every time I came back she was in tears.

“My poor baby, what’s wrong with you? Is there anything you need for me to do?” I asked.

“Nic, I’m pregnant!” she replied.

This was supposed to be a joyous moment for the both of us. Due to our current circumstances this was the wrong time to bring a baby into the world. However, neither one of us believed in abortion; we had to deal with the circumstances at hand.

The following week, Nakia went to the doctor to get a check up and to find out how far along she was.  I came home from work, excited to hear the news. We needed some good news in our universe. When I walked in the door, she was sitting on the couch with a bottle of gin and a cigarette; crying yet again, with her mascara running and hair all over her head.

“What’s wrong now, babe?” I asked.

“Nic, come here and have a seat.” As I sat across from her, she asked, “So who is it?”

“Who is who?” I said, clueless.

“Who is the bitch that you have been cheating on me with?” she replied.

“What? What are you talking about?” I said nonchalantly.

“Nic, we both got tested before we said our vows to one another and we both came back negative for everything,” she replied.

“Right!” I concurred.

“Nic, I just came from the hospital because Dr. Cherry was taking his clients there today. They ran my blood work to make sure that the baby and I are ok.  I came back positive for HIV, Nic. Now, not only did you sacrifice my life but you also sacrificed the life of our unborn child. So I am going to ask you again. Who the fuck is it?”

“I didn’t cheat on you baby,” I said nervously.

“So how did I get this, Nic? I haven’t been with anyone other than my husband,” she said in a very angry tone.

“I promise I didn’t cheat,” I said, trying to convince her and myself. How could things have gone so wrong?

Just then, she pulled out a gun from the seat cushion of the couch.

“Motherfucker, who is it?”

“Nakia, what are you doing?”

“Tell Me! Tell Me! Tell…ME! Or I swear to God I will shoot your ass,” she demanded.

“Ok, ok, ok…I fooled around with this dude that I met off this internet chat site. But it’s over now; it was just a few times, baby. It was just a phase,” I explained.

“A few times? And you couldn’t even respect me or our marriage enough to use a fucking condom with this motherfucker. Really, Nic? Are your serious right now?” she said disappointedly.

Nakia started shaking her head and cried even harder.

Trying to catch her breath, she screamed. “I can’t believe you would do this to me. A dude? So you’re gay. What the fuck? How could you play me for a guy? I gave you everything. All these fucking years of my life wasted. Why God why? What did I do to deserve this?”

 She started pacing the floor.

“I want you to get your shit and get the fuck out,” she continued.

She picked up a vase of flowers and threw it at me.  I ducked to miss the flying vase as it crashed and shattered against the wall.

“Nakia, baby, are you serious? I didn’t cheat on you with another female,” I stated franticly. It had made sense when I said it over and over in my head, but now I wasn’t sure.

“I would have preferred that you cheated on me with a female. Now I have this shit! I never, in all my life, thought I would hate someone as much as I hate you right now,” she said hysterically.

“Baby, please!” I pleaded.

“No, Fuck No. Don’t fucking baby me. I lost my job, I lost my mother, I lost my husband to some nigga, I am pregnant and I have a deadly disease and you… it’s because of you, you trifflin’ ass motherfucker,” she yelled.

Nakia pointed the gun at me. Hands shaking, she cocked the gun back and put her finger on the trigger.

“I trusted you, I loved you, and I fuckin’ sacrificed so much… for YOU! I want you to get your shit and get the fuck out of my life right now,” she said aggressively.

“But where will I go?” I whispered.

“I don’t give a…” she said as I interrupted her.

“Nakia! You’re bleeding!” I said and pointed at the blood running down her leg...

“I loved the book. I read it in less than 24 hours. I just couldn’t put it down!! I won’t make any specific comments because I dont wanna spoil it, but the stories that stick out the most are "Threesome" that was brilliant and "Bad Blood" so sad yet prob happens all too often. I loved "About the Author" which brought it all together! Great Job Will! “WOW Will, really this was oh so real and powerful. The insights and realness of these stories are unbelievable. I have never read a book that gave me so much emotions and I mean emotion from within myself as well as from the every story in this book. You

hit the mark with this one and you did it with class and skills.I enjoyed all the stories but I must say (loose change and about the author) are the two that took my heart. You have a winner in this!!!!
